Why is the surgery being performed?
In case of recurrent throat infections occurring about thrice
or four times a year; that are not responding to medicines.
Anatomical explanation of surgery
(diagram): Removal of the tonsils that are on either sides
of the throat and behind the tongue as well as removal of the
adenoids that are situated at the back of the nose and above the
palate.
Any special test before surgery:
Blood tests to ascertain the adequacy of hemoglobin in the blood
and to make sure that no ongoing infection is present. Blood group
and type.
Preparations before surgery:
should have a course of antibiotic a week before the intended
date of surgery.
Risk of surgery: Risk of bleeding
during surgery, immediately after surgery and if neglected
even after 10days after surgery.
Care during Hospitalization:
Must be admitted in bed for at least for 2 days and should will
have to receive antibiotics by injection.
Care at Home: Should avoid exposure
to dust and infection for 2 weeks.
Diet: Ice cold liquids and
ice cream soon after the operation. Soft bland diet for a week
thereafter.
Bath: Can have body bath
on the next day after discharge, however it is wise to avoid
head bath for7 a week after surgery till he is seen for review.
Care of incision: No incision
externally is seen in this operation
Activity: To avoid vigorous
exercise and play for a week. School can be resumed one week
after discharge
Medications:
Antibiotic and anti inflammatory drugs in syrup form will be
given for a week.
Equipment
Returning to work: After one week
Coping with stress: Can be
undertaken
Symptoms to report to your physician:
(Call your doctor when) Bleeding occurs from the mouth and it
is continuous more so it this occurs after a week after
surgery. Inability to swallow persistently
