Sri Ramachandra university : About Us

In the early eighties, policies to promote private sector participation to help accelerate the economic growth of India inspired many entrepreneurs to explore the new avenues in health care industry and medical education. Few Chennai based industrialists under the leadership of Shri N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar established a not for profit Trust in 1985 and named it 'Sri Ramachandra Education & Health Trust'. Sri Ramachandra University was established in the year 1985 as part of this trust under the leadership of Shri N.P.V. Ramaswamy Udayar.

"Sri Ramachandra University will commit itself entirely to the advancement of medical education, health care and research and will reach a level of excellence in all these fields. The institution shall serve the humanity at large without any prejudice and in all fairness, stay socially - meaningful." These were the words of commitment from the Managing Trustee in 1985 when Sri Ramachandra University was first conceived.

Ever since its inception, the institution has been growing tremendously and constant improvements have been made to raise the standard in every sphere of activity. This college progressed so well in its strength and purpose that in October 1994, the Ministry of Human Resource awarded the institution the distinguished status of a “Deemed to be University”. The prestige and academic autonomy gained thereby paved the way for further growth in health related education. The Deemed University has been established by Sri Ramachandra Educational & Health Trust. The Trust achieved the task of establishing this Institute as a “ Center of Excellence ” under the leadership of Late Shri N.P.V. Ramasamy Udayar who was the Founder & Managing Trustee and also the first Chancellor of the Deemed University . Shri V R Venkataachalam is currently the Chancellor and also the Managing Trustee of the Trust.

Description of Emblem
The emblem of Sri Ramachandra University has four salient images depicted in it: The red triangle with its apex pointing up, the bow, the arrow and the entwined snakes.

The triangle with the arrow underscores the Mission of the University: viz, to merge the three enduring objectives – Education, Healthcare and Research – represented by its three sides into a harmonized whole and hold it launched boldly up into the future. The arrow in addition, stands for the wand of Hermes (or the staff of Asclepius) and with the two entwined snakes represents the Caduces, which has been traditionally used as the symbol of the medical profession. Uniquely, the bow here adds dynamism of continuous growth and a further dimension to the theme as it holds the arrow poised with its focus into posterity.

The objective of the institution is to have our facility comparable to the level of any major medical establishment in the developed world. With this goal in mind, the Trust, in close co-operation of and guidance from professional experts in administration and teaching, has developed this sprawling 175 acres green campus to a level of a prestigious University today. We reached an important milestone on 1 April 1997 - we signed an inter-institutional alliance with Harvard Medical International, USA. This became a major step in the growth of the institution and has led to tremendous rise in quality in the areas of medical education, health care and research and enhanced the institutions visibility in internationally. The University at present offers 71 medical and allied courses at postgraduate level for qualified graduates and 9 courses at the undergraduate level for +2 (12th grade) students in medical, dental, Para-medical and allied health science disciplines through the following constituent colleges located within the campus:
