The department basically has four divisions, namely Dermatology, Venereology, Leprosy , Cosmetology & Dermatosurgery. All ranges of dermatological diseases are covered. Special clinics are run each day for a particular disease. The details are as given below :

A counsellor attends the psoriasis clinic every Tuesday and every patient is counselled about the disease, course, social impact, prognosis and treatment. More than fifty patients are attended to in each clinic. Every patient is given special individual care and counseling. They are advised about the importance of compliance of treatment, hygiene, social impact of their disease. Leprosy patients from Chengalpet colonies are brought to SRMC for screening of any systemic problems and are treated accordingly for the same. Dr Usman N, is in charge of the STD clinic. He is at present the advisor to NACO and expert for the different HIV programmes in the country. Counselling of patients with various STDs and HIV are done. Multidisciplinary approach is being adopted for management of HIV patients.
Cosmetology & Dermatosurgery
We offer the following services to our patients:
- Electrofulguration: Treatment of various superficial skin lesions like warts and skin tags by passing electric current.
- Cryosurgery: The same effect as above is attained by freezing the skin using liquid nitrogen thereby inducing the temperature to very low levels
- Iontophoresis: Passing low voltage current through the skin for management of hyperhidrosis, drug delivery and treatment of scars
- Punch grafting: Grafting skin from normal sites to area of Vitiligo.
- Microdermabrasion : Treatment of acne scars
- Chemical peels : Trichloroacetic acid peels, glycolic acid peels for the treatment of facial hyperpigmentation, acne scars
- CO2 laser : Treatment of warts, benign skin tumours, acne scars
- Radiofrequency: New treatment modality for naevi (mole) keloids.

- Acne scar revision
- Excision of small cutaneous tumours, sebaceous cysts
- Narrow Band UVB Therapy: Latest therapy, specific for vitiligo, psoriasis & various dermatoses.
- PUVA Therapy: Administration of UVA to Psoralen sensitized skin for a variety of indications including psoriasis and vitiligo
Diagnostic procedures
- Skin Biopsy & Histopathology: An investigative procedure for accurate diagnosis of various skin disorders
- Slit Skin Smear: An investigative procedure for the diagnosis of Hansen’s Disease
- Skin scraping for superficial fungal infections
