Mohan came to us at Sri Ramachandra Cleft and
Craniofacial Center at the age of twelve. He had a malformation
of his skull, forehead and nose, which made him look grotesque and
abnormal. This caused him lots of stress in school because his friends
would discriminate against him because of his appearance. Even his
teachers considered him to be retarded, though he was normal in
every way and is of above average intelligence.
His family was very poor and could not afford a decent living, leave
alone expensive medical care, which is needed for corrective surgery
in cases such as this. The operation is prolonged and may last for
upto 12 hours involving multiple specialties including Plastic surgeons
and Neurosurgeons and needed expert care. We suggested that he tap
some of the available funds from the Government such as the Prime
Minister's Relief Fund, which his father applied for and managed
to get. This only covered part of his expenses. The rest of this
was borne by Subhangam, which is a non-profit charitable trust formed
by Dr.Jyotsna Murthy, to help such people and other philanthropists.
Following this, Mohan underwent an extensive cranioplasty to reshape
his skull and move his eyes and nose to a more acceptable position
on the face. Presently, he is waiting for a second phase of surgery
to improve his appearance. |
