The Department of Nephrology was started in SRMC in September 1995. Nephrology department has state of art equipment and facility for total renal patient care under one roof for both adults and children. The department is housed in the second floor of the seven storied building in a clean and sterile atmosphere wherein patients undergo hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. There is a separate post renal transplant intensive care unit in the same floor for the comfort of patients and relatives, a spacious waiting lounge has been provided for them to relax and interrogate with the staff available at enquiry, billing, admission and pharmacy counters.

In order to cater to patients of poor socio economic strata, service OPD functions from Monday to Saturday between 10 am to 12pm in the outpatient block where professional services, basic investigations and drugs are provided at free of cost. There is also an inpatient block for poor patients where professional care, hospital charges, basic investigations and drugs are given at free of cost to the deserving patients.

Renal Transplant services were started in 1995. Cadaver Transplantation was started in 1996. We have completed 473 transplants which includes 72 cadaveric transplants. We are the second largest center in the country ha\ performed maximum member of cadaver transplants. We have voluntarily initiated the program of organ sharing within city hospitals as early as in 1995 when we sent a kidney to poor patient in Government General Hospital Chennai.
