The Department of Ophthalmology of SRU is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to keep up with the advancement in technology in the evaluation and management of visual impairment and blindness. The faculty of the Department consists of well experienced and Senior Consultants of Ophthalmology, who are giants among their peers and young, enthusiastic Consultants, Associate Consultants and Assistant Physicians who with their competence and professional excellence have done the Department and the Hospital proud with their contribution. The pride of the Department, needless to say, is the young and aspiring postgraduates in ophthalmology from near and far.

There are three units each headed by a Senior consultant of Ophthalmology. The Head of the Clinical Services and Head of Ophthalmology is overall in charge of all the units. Each unit has two admission days where the outpatients are attended to and two operation days where ophthalmic surgical procedures are carried out.

Outpatient services include refraction and prescription of spectacles, slit lamp biomicroscopic evaluation of the anterior and posterior segments and applanation tonometry. Routine screening is undertaken for Retinopathy of Prematurity in premature infants. Patients requiring investigative procedures like Ultrasonography and Fluorescein angiography are referred to the Main Block where these procedures are done.

The Main Block is fully equipped with the latest equipments for investigation and treatment of almost all ophthalmic disorders. These include Digital Fundus Camera-Carl Zeiss, Humphrey visual field analyzer - Carl Zeiss, A and B scans, Argon Laser and Frequency Doubled Yag laser - Carl Zeiss machines. The patients requiring cataract surgery are operated in a modern theatre located within the main Block itself. The theatre is equipped with Leica Operating microscope and Storz Phacoemulsifier, Galaxy II phacoemulsifying system. The Department has faculty who are trained phaco and microphaco surgeons second to none in the city of Chennai.
