‘GOOD MEDICAL UNIVERSITIES SHOULD BE ALLOWED SHIFT SYSTEM TO
INCREASE MEDICAL SEATS TO MEET GROWING DEMAND’ – G.VISWANATHAN’S CALL AT
SRI RAMACHANDRA UNIVERSITY

The Chancellor of VIT University, Vellore Dr.G.Viswanthan has asked the Medical Council of India to consider allowing quality private medical universities who have good infrastructure facilities to introduce shift system and permit them to admit more than 150 students in MBBS to meet the growing shortage of health personnel in the country. He was speaking at the Founders Day and University Day functions at Sri Ramachandra University here today after signing a MOU with it for enabling collaborative teaching, training and research in Medical Technology related disciplines.

Presently there is a shortage of seven lakh doctors and fifteen lakh nurses and this shortage will grow multifold with the growth in population. The cost of educating one MBBS student in the All India Medical Institution is one point seven crore rupees. Therefore government should seriously consider helping private institutions in expanding medical education in India, Dr. Viswanathan said.

The MOU was signed by the two Chancellors Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam for SRU and Dr.G.Viswanathan for VITU. They also distributed gold medals, Cash Awards, Merit Certificates to students and staff.

Explaining the scope of the MOU, Dr.S.P.Thyagarajan, Director and Chief Advisor Research, SRU said that joint teaching programmes in the areas of Medical Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Health Engineering, Biotechnology, Bio medical Nanotechnology, Networking and Communications and other areas of basic medical and allied sciences and joint research and development projects to be funded by external funding agencies. It will also enable graduate, post graduate and doctoral research project work and training to be carried out at both SRU and VIT.

In his welcome address, Prof.S.Rangaswami, Vice Chancellor said Sri Ramachandra University has achieved the unique distinction of being the only university in the country to get Grade A with a CGPA of 3.52 for the university and the American JCI accreditation for its medical centre.

Prof. K.V.Somasundaram paid rich tributes to the vision of Founder Chancellor Thiru.N.P.V.Ramasamy Udayar and said he was an embodiment of many of the leadership qualities.
