PRESS RELEASE SRI RAMACHANDRA MEDICAL CENTRE CURES SIX MONTH OLD BABY WITH FEEDING PROBLEMS BY LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY
Chennai, Doctors at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre here have cured a six month old baby, with an uncommon condition of feeding problems, through laparoscopic surgery. Mohan(name changed), a six month old boy was referred to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre with feeding problems since second month of birth. Due to inadequate feeding he was unable to gain weight and weighed only four kilos when his normal weight should have been six kilos. Doctors in the Paediatric Surgery department of SRMC diagnosed the condition as Achalasia cardia(block in the lower end of the food pipe) and took up this challenge of surgically treating the infant by involving a team of paediatric gastroenterologist, nutritionist and an anesthetist. The department of paediatric surgery performed a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. The diseased area was incised and the raw area covered by stomach (cardiomyotomy and fundoplication). On the second day of the operation the baby was started on feeds and he could take it normally, which he was not able to do for the last four months. The baby was discharged on the third day because of the minimally invasive surgery. The parents were relieved with the baby having regular feeds. .........................................................
