SRI RAMACHANDRA MEDICAL CENTRE SETS UP HEART FAILURE CLINIC

Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre has set up a state-of-the-art Heart Failure Clinic that will provide comprehensive management of heart failure. Dr.William Tober Abraham, Professor of Medicine in Cardiovascular Medicine and Dr. Benjamin Sun, Chief, Cardiothoracic Surgery from Ohio State University, Columbus, USA who are closely associated with the unit in teaching, training and introducing world renowned established therapies inaugurated it here today. Speaking on the occasion they said that heart failure is growing rapidly like an epidemic and today it is the number one cause for all hospital admissions of persons over 65 years in the Unite States. In understanding heart failures we are in a state of infancy. There are so many different causes and there is a need for a lot of research in this field which thus unit will address. Internationally established therapies will be made available at this clinic, they said.

The two American doctors along with Dr.Mohan Thanikachalam, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Ohio State University were conferred with visiting professorship of Sri Ramachandra University by the Chancellor Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam.

Giving an overview of the Heart Failure Clinic at SRMC, the Chairman of its Cardiac Care Centre, Dr.S.Thanikachalam said patient oriented evidence based comprehensive treatment will be given at the clinic adhering to the norms of the Federal Drug Administration, USA and Indian Council of Medical Research. This centre might come up with a registry that will be useful for epidemiological research. All clinical research trials will adhere to every aspect of established protocols, he said. One third of all heart patients being treated at SRMC had heart failures and by 2020 India will have the largest population of prevalence of cardiac problems and the incidence will surpass even cancer. There has be to a concerted effort to prevent this and the Heart Failure Clinic at SRMC will address this, he added.

Dr.Thanikachalam said that heart failure can be due to acquired heart diseases like rheumatic heart disease, hypertension, coronary artery disease, renal failure and due to birth defect. Last but not the least idiopathic wherein there is no definite reason so far identified and also of genetic and chromosomal abnormality in origin, he said.

The Vice Chancellor Prof.S..Rangaswami, Dean of Faculties Prof.K.V.Somasundaram, Dr.Richard Saldanha, Chief Cardio Thoracic Surgeon, and Dr.JSN Murthy and Dr.Asha Moorthy, Cardiologists participated in the event.
