Chennai, The adverse female sex ratio is prevalent even among the educated, rich and elite society in India said Mrs. Chandra Thanikachalam, Hon.Secretary of Indian Council for Child Welfare, while speaking at a workshop on “Women in a changing world – challenges and opportunities”, organized by the Centre for women’s advancement of Sri Ramachandra University, here today. One third reservation of seats for women in local bodies and the encouragement to women’s self help groups have gone a long way in the empowerment of women in India, she said. Speaking on the occasion, renowned musician Mrs. Sudha Raghunathan said women can be leaders in any field. Indian women, she said, are an epitome of what women should be. As a widely traveled person overseas, she said, “the respect for Indian women abroad is amazing”, she said. Dr.Vijayalakshmi Thanasekaran, Chief Adviser of Sri Ramachandra Centre for Women’s Advancement said 55% of students, teachers and other employees of Sri Ramachandra University are women and they should take the lead in launching interventional projects in the society to educate and empower women.
