PRESS RELEASE

THE WORLD IS SOUND FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANT CHILDREN

Chennai,
20th January 2010

How does one describe the journey from a world of silence to that of sound, words, speech and interaction with the others. Sheer ecstasy??? That’s what Kalyani who underwent cochlear implant surgery at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre four years ago, gave her mother who had at one time thought that her daughter would never hear or speak in her life. Today Kalyani goes to school like others and sings rhymes and reels out mathematical tables much to the delight of her parents. Similar were the stories and experiences of a dozen other children who had gathered at the fourth anniversary of CLIPS – Cochlear Implant Programme of Sri Ramachandra University. Speaking on the occasion Dr.Ravikumar, HOD, ENT and Neck Surgery said the meet is an excellent opportunity for parents of children who are waiting for cochlear implant to know how those who had undergone the surgery have slowly started hearing and speaking and become like normal children. So far 16 children and three adults had undergone this surgery at SRMC he said.

Dr.S.Rangaswami, Vice Chancellor, commended the doctors, audio and speech therapists, other para medics and especially parents of the children for their sustained and continuous commitment in helping these children get back the faculties of hearing and speech.

Dr.Prakash Bhoominathan, Associate Professor, Speech, Language and Hearing Department stressed the role of unrelenting rehabilitation efforts on the part of parents in association with speech, language and hearing pathologists.
