PRESS RELEASE

RARE HERNIA SURGERY ON 2 DAY OLD BABY

Chennai,
11 February, 2008

A rare surgery on a two day old boy child of Srikanthan and Subba to rectify congenital diaphragmatic hernia through thoracoscopic procedure has been done at Sri Ramachandra University. In CDH there is a hole in the diaphragm (portion between abdomen and the chest) through which the intestines go into the chest cavity. This caused undue pressure on the lungs and the baby had difficulty in breathing for which an emergency operation had to be performed as soon the baby was stabilized by the neonatologist. The surgery was performed by making three holes in the chest wall and the thin partition was cut and stitched with the help of fine instruments.

The complexity of the procedure is the limited space available for doing this surgery and requires dexterity on the part of the surgeon and technically demanding and requires excellent perioperative anesthetic management.
