REGENERATION OF GUM TISSUES - A AREA IN DENTAL RESEARCH

Regeneration of gum tissues, link between periodontal problems and heart diseases, oral hygiene and general health and cost effective oral health are some areas of cutting edge dental research worldwide said Prof.Jocelyne Feine, Chairperson, International Association for Dental Research (IADR) India Initiative here today. She was inaugurating a workshop on IADR India Initiative for collaboration in dental research at Sri Ramachandra University which has been selected one of the seven dental institutions in India for joint research. SRU has excellent infrastructure, faculty and capability for dental research she said.

Speaking on the occasion the Vice Chancellor Prof S.Rangaswami said the impact of infections of dental implants can be devastating and requires research study. Prof S.P.Thyagarajan, Director Research called for exchange of students and faculty to promotegreater dental research. ProfK.V.Somasundaram, Dean of faculties said SRU is a pioneer in translational clinical research and that seven students have registered for Ph.D., in dental research in important areas. Prof.R.Suresh, Principal, Sri Ramachandra Dental College and Hospital said that extensive screening of school children has been planned to study the prevalence, causes and impact of gum disease. To start with 2500 students belonging to five schools around the university will be screened and treated for two years.
