Chennai, Sri Ramachandra University is signing MOUs with the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) Kalpakkam, for collaboration in Medical Technology and with the National Institute of Epidemiology, NIC (ICMR), Chennai for teaching and training in Epidemiology and Public Health. The MOUs will be signed on the Founder’s day today by Prof S.Rangaswami, Vice Chancellor SRU with Dr.Baldev Raj, Director, IGCAR and with Dr.Lalit Kant, Chief, Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases Division, JCMR. The tie-up with IGCAR will help promote joint research and development projects in new biodosimeiric techniques, risk assessment from medical radiation exposures, development of gadgets and implants for medical and dental applications, environmental and occupational safety, biotechnology, bio fouling and bioremediation, disaster management, psychological counseling etc. There will also be exchange of students and researchers for teaching, training and research and joint symposia In the first phase, six research projects have been jointly developed on (1) portable x-ray machine for both soft and hard tissues; (2) bioglass coated titanium implants; (3) high- throughput mutational assays; (4) human lymphocytes for biodosimetry; (5) metal array for detection of multiple cancer antigens and (6) thermogram for diagnosing breast cancers. The MOU with NIE envisages (a) teaching and training various aspects of public health including occupational and environmental health, development of training modules and resources; (b) student and faculty exchanges; (c) developing studies with field-based epidemiological research and public health projects for extra mural funding and (d) access to library and knowledge sharing facilities. The programmes that would be jointly launched immediately are (1) the participation of the department of Environmental Health Engineering, SRU headed by Dr.Kalpana Balakrishnan, in the MPH course of NIE and (2) enabling epidemiology expertise of NIE for the conduct of the major DST research project on analysis of risk factors in population for endovascular diseases undertaken by Dr.S.Thanikachalam, Chairman and Director, Cardiac Care Centre, SRTJ. In realising the vision of the Founder Chancellor, Thiru. NPV Ramasamy Udayar, Sri Rainachandra University is emerging as an “International Center of Excellence in Translational Education and Research and Biomedical Nanotechnology”. The prime objective is to develop special manpower and specific research expertise to translate basic science discoveries in laboratories into treatment modalities to alleviate the sufferings of patients at large. In order to achieve these, SRU is joining hands with Institutions of Excellence in the country and abroad on specific theme-based collaborations. SRU is fully convinced that only through such collaborations and co-operation in educational and research innovations, talents can be nurtured and excellence in medical sciences can be achieved.
