PRESS RELEASE
Chennai, Baby S was diagnosed to have a rare tumor in the left side adrenal gland (above the left kidney) when she was in the mothers womb. The tumor was diagnosed when the baby was 30 weeks old in the mothers womb. Following the diagnosis of a tumor in the baby’s adrenal gland, the doctors were keeping a close eye on the mother and activities of the baby in utero. Baby was born in Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre by normal delivery and was kept in the neonatal ICU and continued to be evaluated by the Paediatric Surgeons who had seen the ultrasound findings and following up the activities of the baby in the mothers womb by serial ultrasound. The Paediatric Surgeons investigated upon the baby and found few of the markers to be very high suggestive of a very rare tumor. Such a tumor being diagnosed before birth giving rise to high levels of the tumor marker has been rarely reported in the literature. The team of Paediatric Surgeons in Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre with the help of expert anesthesiologist performed a highly skilled minimally invasive surgery in an one month old baby to remove the huge 5 cm tumor through 4 small openings on 26/8/2008. Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre has the expertise and miniaturized instruments to perform such advanced minimally invasive surgery in small babies. The state of the art facilities involving neonatal anesthesia, neonatal intensive care and excellent nursing makes it possible to get good results out of such complex surgeries in an one month old baby. The baby is recovering well with 4 tiny little scars. To the best of our knowledge such an advanced procedure has not yet been performed in the city of Chennai.
