COURSE ON VOICE CONSERVATION AND CARE LAUNCHED

A certificate course on voice conservation and care to be conducted by the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences of Sri Ramachandra University in collaboration with the Department of Indian Music and University Industry Community Interaction Centre, University of Madras, was launched here last night, on the occasion of “World Voice Day”, by the President of Music Academy and Managing Director of The Hindu Mr.N.Murali. Describing voice as the most used, yet most neglected aspect of the human body, he said the course will help musicians and others who use their voice extensively.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr.S.Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras, said there are references in the Vedas to the healing power of the ragas and the course will help improve and preserve the voice of musicians and others. The Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University, Mr.V.R.Venkataachalam released an audio CD on music therapy compiled by Dr. M. Premeela Gurumurthy, HOD, Indian Music, University of Madras.

The course will be conducted at Sri Ramachandra University twice an academic year in August and January. It will include tutorial and practical classes for three months covering knowledge on basic anatomy and physiology of the vocal system, causes and prevention of voice disorders, breathing exercises, voice culture, learning voice projection, enhancement and healthy voice production. It will facilitate students to develop an individualized voice profile and learn to identify voice problems early.

In her welcome address, Dr. Premeela Gurumurthy said the two universities will combine their strength to provide the best in voice conservation and care. Dr.A.Ravikumar, Professor and HOD, ENT-Head and Neck Surgery, and Dr.Prakash Boominathan, Reader, Department of Speech, Language and hearing sciences, SRU answered questions by musicians at a panel discussion.
