RESEARCH NEEDED ON DRUG ABUSE AND PSYCHIATRIC EFFECTS

How to wean away the increasing number of people from the age old problem of drug abuse and provide relief from the psychiatric effects were discussed through debates, discussions and lectures to mark the observance of international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at Sri Ramachandra University here today.

Prof.O.Soinasundram a doyen in the field and Prof V.Palaniappun, former supertutendents of the Institute of Mental Health, Prof. S .Rangaswami, Vice Chancellor, - Prof.K.V.Somasundaram, Dean of Faculties, Prof R.Ponnudurai Professor and HOD of Psychiatry of SRU and others who participated described the situation as critical and complex.

Some of the medicine prescribed for weaning away a person from drug abuse could have adverse effect otherwise and some of the stimulants and other prescriptions for normal treatment of other disorders are also becoming addictive. A lot of research needs to be done in this area and SRIJ with an investment of over Rs.5O crores in the last one year alone in its Central Research Facility offers a good environment for research in this field, they said.
