Chennai, The former President Dr. A.PJ.Abdul Kalam has asked the Indian Nursing Council to review the nursing courses continuously to bring it on par with the rapid advancements in healthcare system and the creation of specialities and super specialities in medicine. “There is definitely a need to look at the super specialities needed in nursing to compliment the doctors”, he said. Dr.Kalam was interacting with nurses and nursing students here today as part of his teaching programme as a Professor of Eminence of Sri Ramachandra University. Dr.Kalam stressed the need for a change in approach in medicare to improve the safety and quality of care to patients. It is important to train the doctors, nurses, paramedics, technicians and every one connected with medicare so that they can work as a team for providing quality medicare. He a called for common classes in physiology, psychology and anatomy for graduate and post graduate nurses along with MBBS students. Answering a volley of questions from nurses and nursing students about their education, working conditions, future prospects and respect in society Dr.Kalam said well trained nurses with some specialization in heath care management can even run rural health centres which are without enough staff. Such nurses who work in rural health centres should be given preference in higher nursing education and research work leading to Ph.D he said. Stating that India alone required over twenty lakh nurses in the next five years and there is a very heavy demand from abroad as well, Dr.Kalam said nursing itself has become a science rather than an art. That is why combined classes with medical students are necessary, he said. Dr.Kalam also suggested brain storming sessions among doctors, para medics, technicians, nurses, patients and their families to eliminate short comings and improve the health care delivery system. Over 200 nurses and nursing students took a pledge as administered by Dr,Kalam as follows: The Chancellor, Mr.VR.Venkataachalam felicitated Dr.Kalam with special children of Vidya Sudha of SRU, presenting him with paintings and mementos made by them. Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor Dr.S.Rangaswami said the association of Dr.Kalam with Sri Ramachandra University will enrich its faculty, students and researchers. Speaking on the occasion, Dr.S.P.Thyagarajan, Director and Chief Advisor, Research, said, 20 post graduate nurses have registered for Ph.D programmes at SRU. .………………………………..
