INDO EUROPEAN FOUNDATION SET UP AT SRI RAMACHANDRA TO TRAIN ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS Chennai, An Indo-European Arthroscopy-Arthroplasty Foundation (IEAAF) has been set up at Sri Ramachandra University, to provide international level facilities for training young orthopedic surgeons. Inaugurating it at SRU today the President of the Foundation, Prof. Alex Fievez a renowned sports medicine surgeon from the Netherlands said with a large network in Europe and the excellent cadaver, research and medical facilities at SRU we will be able to provide the latest in health care and teaching methods to many patients and students. Prof Fievez along with Dr. J.W. van Ommeren and other senior orthopedic surgeons from the Netherlands and India conducted live surgeries on the shoulder joints that was watched by surgeons from several parts of India, attending a two day symposium on "Shoulder Arthroscopy and Minimally Invasive Arthoplasty" conducted as part of the start of the Foundation. In his key note address, Prof.S.P.Thiagarajan, Chief Advisor and Director, Research, SRU said, "today's orthopedic research has several innovative approaches in the areas of fixation and repair of fractured bones and therapies for osteoarthritis. They focus around two major areas – biomaterial development to address the issues of strength, bio-compatibility and tissue regeneration and cell based technology development which utilize cell manipulation and delivery for tissue regeneration and repair. The scientific and clinical challenge that remains to be achieved is to perfect cell based tissue engineering protocols to utilize the body's own rejuvenation capabilities by managing surgical implantations of scaffolds, bioactive factors and reparative cells to regenerate damaged and diseased skeletal tissues". Speaking on the occasion Prof.S.Arumugam, Executive President of the Foundation and Head, Department of Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine said, "the foundation will conduct symposiums every six months, consisting of lectures and live surgical demonstration of state of the arthroplasty technologies by the European faculties. An exclusive facility has been created in SRU for conducting cadaver workshop. In addition the young orthopedic surgeons will also have opportunity to listen to lectures on recent advances and watch those techniques on live surgeries and practice them on plastic models as well. This will give them the required confidence and skill for performing sophisticated operative surgeries. The foundation will also offer a four week fellowship at leading centers in Arthroscopy in Europe to young orthopedic surgeons".
