 The department was started in 1987, with objectives of promoting better psychiatric care for the patients attending this hospital. It was also necessary to impart psychiatric training among the undergraduate medical students for which an organized department
of psychiatry was an essential pre-requisite. It was also felt that more research works need to be carried out in this field of medicine to promote positive mental health among the people.
Over the years, expansion of this department’s activities has helped
to train postgraduate students in general medicine, Community medicine and Paediatrics. Besides the post graduate students of MD Psychiatry and DPM courses, students from the various paramedical courses such as clinical psychology, psychiatric social
work, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, pharmacology
and speech and hearing are also benefited from this department.
