About the department
The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) was established at SRU in October 1995. As a unique department in a medical university and hospital, the department has grown leaps and bounds meeting the needs of the communicatively challenged.

Activities of the department revolve around four major areas:
  • Academic training

  • Clinical services

  • Research

  • Community oriented professional practice
These thrust areas have evolved over the years as a result of the evaluation of the needs of the population served, the skills available at the department, and the placement as a part of a large medical center servicing rural and suburban population.

The current areas of clinical focus include:
  1. Interdisciplinary team care in cleft lip and palate

  2. Community oriented rehabilitation for individuals with cleft lip and palate

  3. Voice with special reference to professional voice users

  4. Stuttering and other fluency disorders

  5. Speech and Language evaluation and therapy for various communication disorders

  6. Hearing Evaluation

  7. Neonatal Hearing Screening

  8. Middle ear evaluation for individuals with cleft lip and palate

  9. Analog and Digital hearing aid trial

  10. Cochlear implantation

  11. Auditory Verbal Therapy for cochlear implantees

  12. Early intervention center for the hearing impaired
