1. Why should I choose Sri Ramachandra Medical College for my medical or dental education?
 
  • Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute (Deemed University) is located in suburban Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu state and is only about 20 minutes away from the airport. The city of Chennai well known and called Madras in the past, is a modern metropolis with all the amenities and comforts that one would look for in a big city. The temple town of Kancheepuram and he shore temple and architectural marvel of Mahabalipuram are only a short travel from the college campus and are great tourist attractions.

  • Commissioned in the year 1985, more than 15 batches of MBBS students have passed out of SRMC and they are all well placed in different parts of the world including India. The 175-acre campus is indeed a mini town with facilities well suited for several thousand students pursuing various courses of studies. The natural set in of the campus and the infrastructure created to meet the highest standards in medical care, education and research are only too well known in India.   • SRMC is fully recognized by the Medical Council of India and the Dental Council of India.

  • SRMC is included in the directory of the World Health Organization, which is a required for the college qualifications to be recognized internationally for purposes of higher postgraduate education and employment opportunities.

  • SRMC is recognized by the General medical Council of UK.

  • SRMC has an ongoing inter institutional alliance with Harvard Medical School. Boston, USA, since 1997. Through the aegis of this alliance, the quality of academic education at SRMC receives frequent reviews and up gradation. Several meaningful student and faculty exchange programs, CME seminars and research collaborations are included in the activities. The Harvard Liaison Committee at SRMC will assist and facilitate the process of securing clerkship positions at Harvard related institutions through Harvard Medical International for the benefit of our senior students. Every year, the best out-going student from SRMC will received partial funding and sponsorship to undertake a clerkship position in a Harvard related institution. Senior students are encouraged and allowed to participate in many of the Medical Education related programs and workshops conducted at SRMC in association with Harvard Medical International.

  • Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute is an autonomous Deemed University and has developed the necessary infrastructure not only to meet the expectations and standards of the Medical Council of India but also to stay competent and competitive in the area of medical education, health care and research globally. As an institution offering post graduate and higher specialty education in medicine and health related areas, the institution offers a very high level of academic strength to the undergraduates.

  • Sri Ramachandra Medical Center and the Hospital located inside the campus maintain a bed strength in excess of 1500, offering a wide spectrum of primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care. The outpatient department and the private clinics receive 4000 patients – visits each day. There is a good mix of patients from the city of Chennai and also those from hundreds of villages close to the campus. Being close to major interstate highways the emergency center is one among the most modern facilities in the country with a full range of diagnostic equipment and treatment options. Students can readily appreciate the significant amount of clinical knowledge and experience they can gain from all these.

  • Students of SRMC do not have to depend upon any facility out-side the campus for their learning and training.

  • There are close to 2000 rooms in the hostels for men and women students. Good sized single batch attached rooms are available for NRI / Foreign students. These hostels are located in safe and beautiful surroundings and have quick direct access to the classrooms, laboratories, hospitals and the Sri Ramachandra – Harvard Library Learning Center.

  • Facilities for sports and cultural activities have been given special important and to promote this, ground facilities and courts for playing cricket, tennis, volleyball, basketball etc have been developed extensively. Coaches for all indoor and outdoor sport activities are available. Students from SRMC actively participate and compete in many inter-colleges and varsity sports events. Indoor games facilities for Table tennis, Billiards, and Carom etc in addition to well-equipped gymnasium are available in each hostel. Several social and cultural activities take place and students have shown a lot of interest in these activities over the years.

  • The safety and security of our students has been given utmost importance in SRMC campus. The entire campus is well compounded by walls and trained security men are posted in all strategic locations including the single main gate entrance. Several faculty members and hostel wardens live in side the campus in proximity to the hostels. SRMC has a track record of no student intimidation or ragging incidences of any significance inside the campus since the inception. Apart from the excellent traditions set by the senior students in this regard, our faculties also help monitor the situation and take prompt and severe disciplinary action when necessary.

  • SRMC can be considered as one of the most wired institutions in India. The Dish net access to Internet with its broadband capabilities is a great asset to the students. In addition to the hundreds of computers available to students in the Sri Ramachandra Harvard Library Learning Center connectivity can be established from many areas including the hostels

  • All the classrooms and lecture theaters are well ventilated and many are even air-conditioned. Provision for multi media presentations including models and visuals are made available in all the teaching areas.

  • SRMC receives students from many countries and from all the different states in India. Several fellow sponsored by the WHO for higher training in specialties and many medical students from other countries including US, UK and Canada come for short-term rotations and clerkships. The cosmopolitan culture and the international attitude and outlook in the campus are readily perceptible even to a casual observer.

  • Students who have an inclination towards research in addition to their course work and training will be able to find appropriate mentors in the areas of their interest.

  • Ever since the college started in the year 1985 each year SRMC has admitted several NRI / Foreign students coming from different countries like USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Mid-east countries and Malaysia. The faculty and staff are aware of the various backgrounds from which these students come from and are able to reach out and provide the necessary social and academic help for every individual student to express his / her full potential.

  • Students who have graduated from SRMC have consistently performed well in USMLE and PLAB examinations and were able to secure very good residency positions in USA / Canada and UK. SRMC graduates are practicing a very wide range of specialties in different parts of the world and very well placed.

  The Alumni of SRMC are spread over several parts of USA, Canada UK and other countries. It is possible to contact old students of SRMC close to the applicant’s home and SRMC will be happy to provide the contact numbers and addresses.

3. Who should be contacted if a NRI / Foreign student has any difficulty or problems?
  The Chancellor, the Vice-chancellor, the Registrar, the Dean of Faculties, the Principal, and the Chief Hostel Warden are all available to help any student with his / her problem when needed. The management and administration of SRMC maintain an open door policy for any student to seek advise or get help in case of any difficulty experienced by any student. Mr. Gerard, the NRI student coordinator will facilitate such meetings with any of the officers whenever necessary.

4. Is it necessary that ever NRI student should stay in the Hostel?
  SRMC encourages every student to stay in the hostel so that they can save a lot of time in their demanding schedule of studies and not waste it in long travels. It is certainly important that the first ear is spent in Hostel. Whether an NRI student stays in the hostel or attend, as a day scholar the fees collected will be the same.

5. How well are the hostel rooms furnished? Are they air-conditioned?
  Every hostel room has a desk, chairs, bookrack and godrej safe in addition to a cot without mattress. Students have to procure their own mattresses, pillows and sheets, Rooms are given provision to place window air-conditioners. The Maintenance staff will help to install a window A/c if a student can procure the same.

6. Are there facilities for parents or guardians to stay in the campus when they come to visit the students?
  The Archana Guest House and the Canteen facilities are available for the benefit of guests including students, parents and guardians. Single double and AC rooms are available on payment of reasonable charges. SRMC does not allow anyone else to stay with the student in his / her hostel room. The college authorities wish to maintain a close rapport with the parents and guardians of students and they are most welcomed to meet members of the faculty or the Dean.

7. Are students in the hostel allowed to visit their friends and guardians and stay over night or the weekend?
  Students are expected to let the Warden in charge know about their visit to the guardian and their expected time of return. These rules are nnly for the benefit and safety of the students and also give the information to their parents if they should call in the meantime.

8. What kinds of Meal plans are available for NRI / Foreign students?
 

For these students there is a flexible plan that each student can use depending upon his / her own preferences.

Both male and female hostels serve Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian food. Students can buy coupons at the monthly rate or pay as they take the meals each time.

There is a special restaurant close to the ladies hostels (forest Restaurant) where meals and special dishes can be ordered. Payment is made as and when the meal is taken.

There is a large Vegetarian cafeteria in the ground floor of the Archana Guest house where again students can pick up their and pay as they come each time.

There are two other eating facilities inside the campus.

Thus one can see the alternatives and varieties of foods that are available for students in SRMC.

9. What kind of Visa is required for a foreign passport holder to come to India and study?
  For any NRI student, getting a visa for studies in SRMC or for that matter in any major institution in India is not a problem. Most students prefer to come with a PIO card issued by the Indian Embassy. This gives a lot of privileges for students to come in and out of the country any number of times with ease. SRMC will be able to give the necessary papers to get a student Visa also for NRI / Foreign students. As a matter of requirement, all NRI foreign students should be cleared by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India and in this regard the institution will help with the process.

10. Do you have a dress code for the students?
 

Yes, eventhough no specific uniform is prescribed, students are expected to avaoid wearing T shirts, Jeans, shorts, sandals and Sneakers while in class rooms, laboratories, colleges & hospitals.

Students are expected to wear a half sleeve white lab coat while in the premises of the colleges and hospitals at all times.

Lady students are expected to wear churidhar, Sarees or Pant suites.

Half dress and skirts are discouraged.

SRMC respects the religious customs and sentiments of every student.

11. Are there laundry facilities in the campus?
  Yes! The laundry in SRMC serves the needs of students and the services have been rated satisfactory by the students.

12. Are there banking facilities inside the campus?
  The State Bank of India, and the Indian Bank (full time branch) have their extension counters inside the campus. ATM facilities are available. Students can maintain their bank accounts in these facilities.

13. Are students permitted to keep valuable things in their hostel rooms?
  Although the hostel rooms are considered reasonably safe it is important that students do not bring valuable items with them like expensive jewelry, cameras, antiques etc. They can have a lap top and basic non expensive music equipment (that will not make loud music) and their day to day needs.

14. Are there student counselors easily accessible inside the campus?
  Yes! Student counselors are available to give necessary help to students in social, psychological, academic and career related areas.

15. What facilities do students have in case anyone falls sick?
  There is a special clinic for students and staff during all working days. Ther services of the Emergency department at Sri Ramchandra Medical Center are open to all the students 24 hours of the day. Students are expected to contact these facilities without delay if they fall sick.

16. What about Health Insurance coverage?
  If students have International Health Insuraanvce coverage( Blue Cross Blue Shield etc), they are encouraged to keep the same continued as it will cover them wherever they may travel during the year. SRMC students are also required to get a Health Insurance card through the college on a yearly paryment, which provides themlimited health coverage.
On arrival, all new students will have to show evidence that he/she has received all the immunizations as necessary. An authorized medical officer at SRMC will coduct a basic health check on all students.

17. Is it possible to move into the hostel a few days ahead of the day of college commencement?
  Yes! Hostel rooms will be ready and assigned 7 days ahead of the date of commencement of the courses. Students can receive the keys from the Assistant Registrar’s Office during working ours (9:00 am to 4:30 pm). Mr. Gerard may be notified of the time of arrival so that he can help facilitate the processss.

18. What are the subjects covered in the MBBS course during the first academic year (semesters I & II) and what are the recommended books in those subjects?
 

The subjects covered in the first two semesters are as follows:

  1. Human Anatomy including histology and embryology.
  2. Human Physiology including Biophysics.
  3. Biochemistry
  4. Introdction to humanities and Community medicine.

All the books necessary for the above courses are available at the bookstore / gift shop in the campus and are easy to procure.

There may be changes in the recommendation of books according to the professor and head of each department and they will guide the students during the orientation period.

Certain standard books that are used are as follows:

  1. M6.
  2. Cunningham’s Manual of Anatom (3 volumees)
  3. A.C Guyton’s Textbook of Physiooogy
  4. Harper’s Biochemistry (Robert K.Murray & Daryll K.Garner)
The courses that are to be taken in the first year of BDS is as follows.

19. Where can we get a copy of the regulations and syllabus for the MBBS / BDS course?
  Each year the syllabus and regulations are updated and the booklets are made available to the students in the Asst. Registrar’s Office.

20. What are the documents I should produce at the time of admission to the college?
 

It is important that on admission the following documents have to be handed over the Assistant Registrar (Academic).

  • Original High School Transcripts
  • Original High School Diploma (If already received bby the candidate)
  • Xerox copies of the first page of passport with the hotograph and also the VISA to enter the country (Provisional student VISA, Student VISA, PIO Card)
  • A statement to show that the high school in which the student has studied has been  accredited by the State / Country
  • Two passport size photographs and two stamp size photographs.
