The Department of Urology & Renal Transplantation is an ISO 9001: 2000 certified department of Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Porur, Chennai .It is a premier center for super specialized urology care. It is also one of the country’s leading renal transplant centers. The center in fact has performed the second most number of cadaver transplants.

In more than ten years of existence the department has followed a path of rapid but steady expansion in terms of patients, procedures, staff and facilities. It has established itself as a major service of the hospital and as an important urology and transplantation center in this part of the world.

Since inception the department has focused on constant improvement of the various services.

It has a MCI recognized MCh Post Graduate teaching programme and has also undertaken four year B.Sc programme in Urology Technology

  • 1996 - Cadaver Transplants started - One of the top three departments in the country that performs cadaver kidney transplants.

Services Offered

  1. Out Patient Services
    Urology outpatient department is available on all days from Monday to Saturday between 8.00am to 4.00pm.

  2. Emergency Services
    A senior urologist is available to attend any to any acute or trauma problem.

The Various Urological Treatment Facilities Available

  1. ESWL (Extra corporeal shock wave Lithotripsy)
    Service was established in 1999. The department Dornier Delta Extra Corporeal Shock wave lithotripter, a third generation top of the line lithotripter which has dual imaging modality and can use both X-ray as well as ultrasound for locating stones. Radiolucent and uric acid stones can be broken by using ultrasound modality of the machine.

  2. Endourology
    Endourology is surgery through an endoscope, which does not require open procedures. Transurethral Resection of the prostate gland for enlarged prostate, Trans urethral Resection of bladder tumor for bladder cancer and uteterorenoscopy for kidney and ureteric stones are regularly performed through fine endoscopes.

  3. Percutaneous Renal Surgery
    Percutaneous Nephrostomy for emergency drainage of urine from a blocked kidney and Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for removal of large kidney stones through a keyhole on the back are commonly performed in the department.

  4. Renal Transplant and Access Surgery
    In the past 9 years almost 450 live related and cadaver transplants have been done. Full range of dialysis access surgeries like arterio-venous fistula and (AVF) and Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) catheter insertion are also available and over 800 such procedures have been undertaken so far.

  5. Urological Cancers
    The well trained surgeons and oncologists at our hospital, with a back up of all investigation tools including MRI, CT scans and ultrasound including Trans- rectal ultrasound, provide a comprehensive Uro –oncology service.

  6. Paediatric Urology
    Paediatric urology is a specialty dealing with surgical problems of kidneys, bladder and genitalia in children .The department has qualified and fully trained surgeons dealing only with this area of expertise. It is a complex field and needs specialist experience and careful investigation to decide when a surgical intervention is required and when it can be avoided.

  7. Andrology and Impotence
    Trained doctors and nurses in the department offer counseling, medical and surgical treatment for impotence and infertility with use of visual aids / brochures and videos. Patients are explained about the complex problems and treatment details. Implantation of Penile Prosthesis and Testicular Prosthesis for appropriate cases.

  8. Urodynamic Studies
    Service started in 1999. We have the most advanced, fully computerized Video Urodynamic machine with facilities for diagnosing voiding dysfunctions. The equipped accessories enhance the capacity of doing Urodynamics study for even infants and small children.

  9. Urethral Reconstructive Surgery
    We undertake a complete range of surgical procedures for various simple and complex urethral strictures.
